16 DAYS OF GBV ACTIVISM IS ALL ABOUT EDUCATING COMMUNITIES

GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE & HEALTH AWARENESS IN MUEA

On Monday, December 1, the D-Light Foundation, in collaboration with the Action Network Foundation, hosted a powerful Gender-Based Violence (GBV) sensitization session in Muea, a community near Buea in Southwest Cameroon.

Reaching 13 women, the session created a safe and supportive space for survivors to share their experiences and challenges, while learning about the different forms of GBV – physical, emotional, sexual, and economic – and its deep impact on individuals, families, and society.

Discussions highlighted how GBV not only harms victims but also perpetuates poverty, mental health struggles, and reduced productivity within communities. Participants were encouraged to recognize GBV, seek help, and strengthen collective action through community support systems and legal frameworks.

Adding to the inspiration, Dr Pat Nkweteyim, a breast cancer survivor and President of D-Light Foundation, shared her cancer journey, reinforcing the message: #CancerCanBeCured when detected early. The participant were told the importance of daily Breast Self-Examination (BSE), with the core message: “Don’t stay quiet on any lump or abnormal change in your breast. SPEAK UP! GET SCREENED! GET HELP!”

The women’s active engagement made the session dynamic and impactful, fostering solidarity and a stronger sense of community.

Together, we continue to raise awareness, break the silence, and build safer spaces for women and families.
